Administrative History: Since opening in 1895 the Royal Hospital for Sick Children had undergone very little alteration, and it was becoming evident towards the end of the 20th century that such a world-renowned institution could no longer function in these conditions. Lothian Health Board's programme of building did not allow any money for the Sick Children's hospital for at least 30 years, and so the TASK (To Aid Sick Kids) Appeal was launched in September 1991 to raise £10 million for the construction of a new hospital wing. Facilities would include parent and child rooms, an intensive care unit, operating theatres, a neo-natal surgical unit, general ward, day care unit, research unit and pharmacy. The Appeal successfully reached its target by April 1992.
