Name of creator(s): Doris Myles

Administrative history: Doris Myles began her nursing career as a VAD nurse at Gleneagles Hotel (used as a military hospital at the time) during World War II. She completed her general nurse training in Edinburgh in 1946. In 1947 she went to London to complete her midwifery training and worked there until 1951, when she became Sister-in-Charge at the Dundee Dental Hospital. She returned to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) in 1953 as Home Sister and then preliminary training school as Sister. Doris became Assistant Lady Superintendent of Nurses at the RIE in 1954 until she transferred to Beechmount Convalescent Hospital as Acting Matron. She transferred back to the RIE in 1957 as Assistant Lady Superintendent. In 1960 she received a certificate of Nursing Administration after undertaking study at the Royal College of Nursing. She then returned to the RIE and remained there until her retirement in 1981 from the position of Senior Nursing Officer of the Surgical Division. Doris died in Dundee in 2010.

Scope and Content: Nursing education coursework and certificates; Red Cross and Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps memorabilia; Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) 250th anniversary newsletters and booklets; nurse's time book; Pelican league mementos; retirement mementos; Royal College of Nursing, RIE Nurses' League, and General Nursing Council membership documents; Scottish hospital and nursing administration documentation; personal ephemera including national registration identity card, curriculum vitae notes, and funeral programme; large collection of photographs relating to nursing work and social events.
