Administrative history: J. Gardner & Son were surgical instrument manufacturers established in Edinburgh in 1866. They operated out of locations on Forrest Road, Teviot Place, and Candlemaker Row. In addition to surgical instruments, they also produced aseptic furniture, surgical bandages, and artificial limbs. While they manufactured a number of standard instruments, they also worked with doctors to produce new instruments and appliances by request. The business was sold by Andrew Norman Gardner in 1943 to Archd. Young and Son, Ltd., Surgical Instrument Makers, who continued to operate the business from the Forrest Road location under the name of J. Gardner & Son.

Scope and Content: Items relating to the work of J. Gardner & Son, Surgical Instrument Manufacturers. These include design sketches and templates of surgical instruments and medical apparatus produced by the company, manuals and catalogues produced by suppliers of materials, and other documents related to the company's business activities. All materials included in this collection date from 1894 to around 1970.
