Name of creator(s): Eileen Paton

Administrative history: Eileen (known as 'Lyndy') Paton (nee MacAskill) trained at the Western General Hospital as part of the North Edinburgh School of Nursing from September 1965 to November 1968. Lyndy moved from Forteviot, near Perth, to enrol in the School of Nursing when she was 18 years old. Throughout her training at the Western General Hospital, Lyndy worked in various wards, such as the children’s ward and the Department of Surgical Neurology. For a brief time, Lyndy also worked at the Eastern General Hospital in Seafield. In October 1968, she sat her finals and passed successfully. After the completion of her studies, Lyndy worked at the Bridge of Earn Hospital (Perth and Kinross) and then worked at Hillingdon Hospital, London. After six years, Lyndy moved back to Edinburgh and started working at the Western General Hospital as relief night duty. She left nursing in 2000 as the only chief phlebotomist (specialist trained to draw blood for medical procedures, transfusion, testing or research) at the Renal Transplant Clinic. She was later asked to return to practice, and subsequently worked for a further 16 years at the Renal Hypertension Clinic (WGH), after which she retired.

Archival History: Custody of Eileen Paton prior to transfer to LHSA.

Immediate Source of Acquisition or Transfer: Donated to LHSA by Eileen Paton in 2018.

 

Scope and Content: Examination papers, nurse training documents, documents specific to the history and activities of the Western General Hospital (Edinburgh), and a small amount of material around obstetric nursing.

Appraisal, Destruction and Scheduling Information: Appraised.
