200 years’ objects from the Royal Ed’ site

2013 has been the bicentenary year for the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, and LHSA has been heavily involved in the celebrations. The first half of the year saw the final five lectures in a series we organised on the Hospital’s behalf covering a wide variety of topics from patient art to treating soldiers after battle, and a wonderful reception in the City Chambers where we were able to display the Royal Charter.

The second half of the year brought two fantastically well-attended ‘pop-up’ museums in the Hospital, where we took important records from the last 200 years and showed them to patients, staff and members of the local community. These proved to be so popular we’re planning on running them again in the future.

We’ve been particularly pleased to work with our Artlink colleagues and help them realise the aims of their project, Ever Present Past, to celebrate the Hospital’s rich history. We’ve taken part in performances, helped with seminars and research that have produced artwork, stories and much more, and contributed to a magnificent display in the Talbot Rice Gallery.

Our new lyric refers specifically to Mark Dion’s ‘200 years, 200 objects’ exhibition in which each year of the Hospital’s history is represented by an item. 55 of the 200 years are illustrated with LHSA objects, and many more were inspired by stories from the Archive. The exhibition is open until 15 February (with a closure period over Christmas), please see the Talbot Rice website for more information:
