Lothian Hospital Histories

Knoll Maternity Hospital

Knoll Maternity Hospital, Duns, was originally run by the Berwickshire Nursing Association. It was in existence by 1938 and served as a maternity home and as a centre for district nurses in the eastern part of the county of Berwick.

On transfer to the National Health Service in 1948 it became part of East Lothian Hospitals group of South Eastern Regional Hospitals Board. It continued to serve as a maternity hospital, with a bed complement of seven. On 1 April 1955 both Knoll Maternity Hospital and Whitchester Cottage Hospital in Duns were transferred to the Borders Hospitals Board of Management. Knoll remains open today as a GP and Acute Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Hospital.
