Lothian Hospital HistoriesEye, Ear and Throat Infirmary of EdinburghThe Eye Infirmary of Edinburgh was founded in 1834. In 1883 departments for ear, nose and throat cases were added and the name changed to the Eye, Ear and Throat Infirmary of Edinburgh (EETIE). In 1922 the EETIE was amalgamated with the Eye Dispensary which had been founded in 1822. The EETIE and the Dispensary were housed at 6 Cambridge Street: the bed complement of the Infirmary was 16. On transfer to the National Health Service in 1948 the Eye, Ear and Throat Infirmary became part of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Associated Hospitals Board of Management. The hospital ceased to provide in-patient services on 1st April 1949. Thereafter the Infirmary buildings housed an orthoptic clinic, an artificial eye centre and the school eye service. These opthalmic services were transferred to the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion on its opening in 1969. |
