Administrative History: Herdmanflat Hospital was built in 1866 by the East Lothian County Council and known in its early history as the Haddington or East Lothian District Asylum. In 1948 the Hospital was transferred to the Board of Management for Rosslynlee and Haddington Mental Hospitals. This Board of Management was dissolved in 1957 and Herdmanflat Hospital was transferred to the East Lothian Board of Management. The Vert Memorial Hospital, previously a maternity unit, was converted in 1973 for use as a psycho-geriatric annexe.
