Administrative History:  The Edinburgh Dental Alumni Society (EDAS) was founded in 1972 for the benefit of the graduates from the Edinburgh Dental School. The establishment of a President and fellow committee members was established in 1979, with Honorary Life members being appointed from 1980.  An important aspect of the society was the opportunity it created for graduates to embark on various research projects through the society’s travel and research awards. Numerous applications were made by graduates for assistance in their dental research, with various amounts of funding being allocated by the society’s committee to individuals. Reports of research trips as far a field as Nepal and Singapore were written for the society as evidence of how the awards were being utilised.  The first Annual General Meeting was held on 9th May 1980. Graduates from across the world had the opportunity to attend guest presentations, participate in the Dental Ball, and to meet fellow graduates of the Edinburgh Dental School.  Due to a lack of funding for dental education in Scotland, the Dental School was closed in 1995. Since its closure, the society has not been as active. There are approximately 1,000 members who continue to receive the annual Presidential Newsletter.
