Centre for Research Collections Internship at the University of Edinburgh

The Centre for Research Collections (CRC) has developed an internship programme to teach and extend core skills in the archive discipline.

An internship is available for 10 weeks full-time from April to June 2015. A stipend of £3100 is attached to the internship.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on unique material in Lothian Health Services Archive (www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk): the internship will focus on cataloguing selected patient case notes from the Edinburgh neurosurgeon, Norman McOmish Dott (1897-1973). The case notes will be catalogued using Encoded Archive Description (EAD) inside an XML editor as part of the Wellcome Trust funded project: Cataloguing Norman Dott’s neurosurgical case notes 1920-1960 (http://www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk/projects/Cataloguingcasenotes.htm). Wider experience of working in the archive and higher education sectors will also be offered.

The internship is ideally suited for someone who has recently completed, or is in the final stages of obtaining, a relevant postgraduate qualification in archive administration or records management.

To apply, provide the following:

  • your CV of no more than 2 sides of A4 (to include contact details, information on your qualifications and any previous voluntary or work experience, and contact details for two referees),
  • a supporting statement of 500 words detailing why you are interested in the internship and describing how participation in the programme would benefit your future career,
  • confirmation that you are eligible to work in the UK. A statement in your CV, covering letter or supporting statement is sufficient at this stage.

Please note that applications without the above will not be considered.

Applications may be sent via email or post to Serena Fredrick (serena.fredrick@ed.ac.uk; Centre for Research Collections, Edinburgh University Library, 30 George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LJ). Applicants will be shortlisted and selection will be based on a subsequent, informal interview at the CRC, to be held on 17 March 2015. Please note that expenses to attend the informal interview will not be paid.

Closing date for applications: 9 March 2015

Interview Date: 17 March 2015

Proposed start date: 13 April 2015
