LHSA Exhibition Commemorating Armistice Day

5 November 2009

LHSA has mounted a small exhibition in the display case in the Centre for Research Collections Reading Room located on the 6th floor of Edinburgh University Library.  The exhibition will be on show until 25 November 2009 and can be viewed by registered users of the CRC.  If you are not a registered user of the CRC but would like to view the exhibition, please Contact Us.

This small display highlights aspects of World War One military medical history recorded in our extensive collections, and has been organised to coincide with and commemorate Armistice Day.

A number of Edinburgh and the surrounding area's hospitals were taken over by the War Office for use as military hospitals during both World Wars.  On show are editions of the "Craigleith Hospital Chronicle", the wartime magazine of the Second Scottish General Hospital at Craigleith (formerly Craigleith Poorhouse, now the Western General Hospital); and photographs of staff and patients at the Edinburgh War Hospital (Bangour Village Hospital, now closed).
