Access our delights

An overview of project funding to open up our collections.

We have been awarded a grant from the final round of the Wellcome Trust’s Research Resources funding stream for the theme 'Combatting infectious disease'. ‘RVH v TB: a project to catalogue LHSA’s Royal Victoria Hospital Tuberculosis and Diseases of the Chest Case Notes and Registers (c.1920 – 2000)’ is our second case note cataloguing project funded by the Wellcome and will commence in Autumn 2014 with a Project Archivist employed for 29 months. The resulting catalogue will enable improved access to researchers all over the world interested in investigating how the first TB Dispensary in the world continued to detect and prevent this virulent disease well into the twentieth century.

The image below shows the gate lodge of the Royal Victoria Hospital, c.1910.

This is not our only Wellcome Trust funding success story of 2013 - we've also been awarded project money to conserve and catalogue our UNESCO-awarded HIV/AIDS collections. We have just appointed our Project Conservator, and we're delighted to be welcoming a new member of staff to our team in the new year to get this exciting project started. For more information about this work please see our project page.

And last but not least, we were awarded a scoping grant towards the end of the year to help us look at our Royal Edinburgh Hospital collections for a potential digitisation project.  So as well as all our work to help others discover and use LHSA material, we're looking forward to working on these specific projects targeted at important parts of the collection.

We are very grateful for the support that the Wellcome Trust has given us for these, and our other cataloguing and conservation projects in the past. For more information about their Research Resources programme please have a look at some promotion films on the Trust's youtube channel. These were produced this year, some of which used our records and the facilities here at the Centre for Research Collections.
