Dott correspondence

Treatment notes from the olden days, of the NHS and before

LHSA holds one of the largest folder-based case note collections in the UK, covering approximately one million individual records, dating from 1892 to 2000.

Case notes present a wealth of sociological and scientific information to medical humanities, clinical and genealogical researchers and contain a fascinating variety of documents, from typed summaries to charts, x-rays, correspondence, sketches and photographs.

To date, LHSA has received five separate project funding awards from the Wellcome Trust Research Resources scheme to carry out vital conservation work on one third of the folder based case notes held in the Archive. These include case notes from the pioneering Edinburgh neurosurgeon, Norman Dott (1897-1973), currently being individually catalogued, for more information please see our project page.

This year has been an extremely busy one for the Dott project. In addition to the main task of cataloguing, there's been outreach work in articles, seminars and conferences as well as welcoming volunteers to learn about the methods of the project. And LHSA will be keeping our focus on case notes in 2014 with a paid internship based on the Dott project starting in January.
