Biographical History: Lothian Health Council was an independent body set up in 1991 to represent the views of the public in Lothian. Its main responsibilities were: the provision of advice and information about the NHS; advising the public on the procedure for making complaints about the NHS; visiting and monitoring health care premises and services; consulting the public on proposed changes to health services.
Statutory consumer representation in the NHS was introduced in 1974 when local health councils were first established. Lothian Health Council was created in 1991 as part of a reorganisation and merger of the 48 original health councils. In 2005 it amalgamated with other Local Health Councils to form the Scottish Health Council.
