Administrative History: The Queen Mary Nursing Home opened in 1913, offering beds for women of limited means and accommodation for staff. In 1955 the Home joined the National Health Service under Edinburgh Southern Hospitals Board of Management, but due to rising costs it was transferred in 1957 to the Royal Infirmary Board and converted. In 1958 it reopened as the Queen Mary Maternity Home, a place where patients could pay a fee to be attended there by their own doctor. Additionally the Home could be used when necessary by the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion to which it was now physically connected. In 1961 the midwifery training school formerly at Melville Crescent was transferred into the upper floors of the building, but over the next decade more and more patients moved into the Simpson, and the Home closed in 1977. The building became part of the South Lothian College of Nursing and Midwifery.
