Name of creator(s): Elizabeth Mackay MacDonald (1885-1966), nurse
Biographical History: Born in Caithness in 1885 MacDonald trained as a nurse at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh School of Nursing until 1914. She went on to serve during World War I in Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (Reserve), which had been set up in 1902 to replace the Army Nursing Service. In October 1917 she was awarded the Royal Red Cross in recognition of her service at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. She died in Edinburgh in 1966.
